Chrome Shovel Trophy

The following is from Carl Meyer's book "We Are Ramblers:   A Reflection of Windber High School Football".

"In 1955 the Windber Jaycees along with their counterparts in Johnstown and Altoona decided to award a traveling trophy to the team which had defeated the other two during the scholastic football season.  This traveling trophy was to be emblematic of the three industrial towns:  Altoona-Railroads, Johnstown-Steel Mills, and Windber-Coal Mining.  The trophy was a Chrome #2 Shovel that could be displayed in a trophy case.

Any team defeating the other two in the same year for three consecutive years would keep the shovel.  In 1963 Altoona defeated both Windber and Johnstown which they had accomplished the previous two seasons.  The Chrome Shovel Trophy is now permanently held by Altoona.  Between the years 1955 and 1963 Windber only once defeated Altoona (1960) and Johnstown (1957)."

Please note I'm investigating why JHS didn't take possession of the trophy following the 1960 season since it appears that they, in fact were the first team to win against both Altoona and Windber in three consecutive seasons.
