Tale of the Tape #1

8/29/08

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week one has JHS taking on the Bisons of Bedford.

SCHOOL: Bedford is a District 5 Class AA school with a male enrollment of according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 272. The school district’s website can be viewed at http://www.bedford.k12.pa.us/default.aspx.

COACH: The Bisons are coached by Dan Smith.

LAST SEASON: Bedford was 2-8 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Bison Stadium

COLORS: Royal Blue and White

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Bedford plays in Section 1 with Forest Hills, Central Cambria, Bedford, Bishop Guilfoyle and Penn Cambria. Aside from JHS, their other non-section opponents are Bishop Carroll, Richland, Westmont and Bishop McCort.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS joined the LHAC in 2001, the Trojans are 2-3 against the Bisons. They’ve been outscored 118-75 in those five contests, however Johnstown have won the last two times these schools met. Johnstown is 5-3 all-time against Beford, beating them 41-0 in 1931, 19-0 in 1932 and 7-0 in 1939.

LAST MEETING: Antwuan Reed had 101 yards on 25 carries and scored 2 TDs while Ray Kirkland scored a touchdown on the ground as well as the Trojans held off the Bisons 21-14 a year ago in Bedford.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will 71 degrees with a 40% chance of rain at kickoff. Winds will be 5 MPH from the south.

9/5/08

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week two takes JHS on the road to take on the Forest Hills Rangers.

SCHOOL: Forest Hills is a Class AA school located in Sidman with a male enrollment of according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 300.

COACH: The Rangers are coached by Don Bailey.

LAST SEASON: FH was 4-6 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: G.H. Miller Memorial Field

COLORS: Forest Green and Gold

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Forest Hills plays in Section 1 with Cambria Heights, Central Cambria, Bedford, Bishop Guilfoyle and Penn Cambria. Aside from JHS, their other non-section opponents are Somerset, Bishop Carroll, Richland and Westmont.

LAST WEEK'S RESULT: Forest Hills beat Somerset 50-20 while Johnstown beat Bedford 37-23.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: The Trojans are 2-4 all time against the Rangers. FH has outscored JHS 120-64.

LAST MEETING: The Trojans defeated the Rangers 38-17 a year ago.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will sunny and 78 degrees at kickoff with a 10% chance of rain. Winds will be 8 MPH from the SSE.

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week three’s opponent is the Westmont Hilltoppers.

SCHOOL: Westmont is a Class AA school located in suburban Johnstown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 246. The school district’s website can be viewed at http://www.whsd.org/.

COACH: The Hilltoppers are coached by Matt Glennon.

LAST SEASON: Westmont was 5-6 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Price Field

COLORS: Scarlet and Gray

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Westmont plays in Section 2 along with Johnstown, Bishop McCort, Bishop Carroll, Somerset and Richland. Their non-section games are Bishop Guilfoyle, Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, Bedford and Forest Hills.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Both squads lost last week, the Trojans fell to Forest Hills 27-21 in overtime while Penn Cambria defeated Westmont 36-28.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS has joined the LHAC in 2001, they are 3-4 against Westmont. The Trojans have been outscored by the Hilltoppers 128-121. The average margin of victory in the three Trojan wins is 12.66 points. The average margin of defeat in the four losses is 11.25 points.

LAST MEETING: Westmont won 14-7 a year ago in a game that was played at Price Field on a Saturday afternoon. Chaz Merriman and Zac Bennett scored touchdowns for the Hilltoppers.

WEATHER FORECAST: The high for Friday in Johnstown is 72 degrees. There is a 50% chance of rain.

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week four sees the Trojans take to short trip to Richland.

SCHOOL: Richland is a Class AA school located in suburban Johnstown. Their home field is very close to the UPJ campus, making it an easy 10-minute drive from the city. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 238. The school’s website is http://www.richlandsd.com/.

COACH: The Rams are coached by Brandon Bailey

LAST SEASON: The Rams were 7-4 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: F. W. Herlinger Field

COLORS: Royal Blue and Red

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Richland plays in Section 2 with Johnstown, Bishop Carroll, Bishop McCort, Somerset and Westmont. Their non-section games are against Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, Bedford, Forest Hills and Cambria Heights.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Last week, Richland defeated Bishop Carroll 34-24 while Johnstown lost to Westmont 6-0.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS has joined the LHAC in 2001, the Rams have yet to beat the Trojans. They are 0-7 against JHS and have been outscored 232-67, losing each meeting by an average of margin of defeat of about 23.57 points. The average score of the contest is JHS 33.14, Richland 9.57. Three straight seasons (2002-2004) saw the Trojans shut out the Rams each season.

LAST MEETING: Last year, the Trojans defeated the Rams 42-21.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will be 59 degrees and sunny at kickoff with 0% chance of showers and winds out of the southeast at 8 MPH.

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week five keeps JHS home to take on the Somerset Golden Eagles.

SCHOOL: Somerset is a Class AA school located about a half hour away from Johnstown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 308.

COACH: The Golden Eagles are coached by Steve Costea.

LAST SEASON: Somerset was 7-4 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Somerset High School Stadium

COLORS: Orange and Black

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Somerset plays in Section 2 with Johnstown, Bishop McCort, Bishop Carroll, Westmont and Richland. Their non-section opponents this year are Forest Hills, Bishop Guilfoyle, Penn Cambria and Central Cambria.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Somerset beat Westmont 27-21 in overtime while JHS beat Richland 17-6.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Up until a year ago, Somerset had never beaten JHS since they joined the LHAC in 2001. From 2001 to present, the Trojans are 6-1 in the series, outscoring the Golden Eagles 267-102 in those seven contests. The average score of those contests is 38.14 to 14.57. JHS and Somerset played four previous times in their history prior to the Trojans’ LHAC days. The Trojans hold a 10-1 advantage in games against Somerset.

LAST MEETING: Somerset beat JHS 35-7 a year ago.

WEATHER FORECAST: It will be 57 degrees with a 50 percent chance of rain at kickoff Friday night. Winds will be from northeast at 10 MPH.

10/3/08

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week six sees the Trojans host the Bishop Carroll Huskies.

SCHOOL: Bishop Carroll is a Class A Catholic School located in Ebensburg which is about a half hour from Johnstown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 91. The school’s website can be viewed at www.bishopcarroll.com.

COACH: The Huskies are coached by Craig Sponsky.

LAST SEASON: Bishop Carroll was 4-6 last season.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: DeGol Stadium, St. Francis University

COLORS: Navy Blue and White

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Bishop Carroll is in Section II with Johnstown, Westmont, Bishop McCort, Richland and Somerset. Their non-section games this year are with Central Cambria, Bedford, Forest Hills, Cambria Heights and Bishop Guilfoyle.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: The Huskies beat Westmont 40-35 while the Trojans won big against Somerset unit 43-12.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: The Trojans are 3-4 against the Huskies since joining the LHAC. The Huskies have outscored the Trojans 131-119 in seven meetings thus far. The average score of the game has been BC 18.71, JHS 17. BC’s margin of victory in their four wins has been 19.25 points while the Trojans margin is 29.66.

LAST MEETING: The Trojans beat the Huskies 35-9 last year in a game played at DeGol Field. Antwuan Reed had 170 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the evening while Jordan Jefferson caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Shawn Lehman. Jon Maurizio was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points on the night.

WEATHER: At kickoff it will be 52 degrees and sunny with no chance of rain in the forecast. Winds will be from the northwest at 5 MPH.

10/10/08

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week seven is against city rival Bishop McCort.

SCHOOL: Bishop McCort is a Class A Catholic school located in Johnstown on Osborne Street. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 160. The school’s website can be viewed at http://mccort.daj.k12.pa.us/. Also, their athletics website (http://mccort.daj.k12.pa.us/athletics/) is a very nice looking site.

COACH: The Crushers are coached by Ken Salem.

LAST SEASON: Bishop McCort was 12-2 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Point Stadium

COLORS: Crimson and Gold

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: BM plays in Section II with Johnstown, Bishop Carroll, Westmont, Richland and Somerset. Their non-section opponents this year are Cambria Heights, Bishop Guilfoyle, Penn Cambria, Central Cambria and Bedford.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: McCort beat Westmont 38-14 while the Trojans defeated Bishop Carroll 16-0.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS has joined the LHAC in 2001 Bishop McCort has the upper hand, winning six of the teams’ seven meetings. However, the Trojans-Crushers rivalry pre-dates JHS’ entry in to the conference. All-time, JHS is 15-8-1 against Bishop McCort.

LAST MEETING: Last year, Bishop McCort beat the Trojans at Trojan Stadium 31-21.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will be 61 degrees with only a 0% chance of rain at kickoff. Winds will be from the north, northeast at 3 mph.

10/10/08

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week eight is against Cambria Heights.

SCHOOL: Cambria Heights is a Class AA school located in Patton. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 188. The school’s website can be viewed at http://cambria.pa.schoolwebpages.com/education/district/district.php?sectionid=1.

COACH: The Highlanders are coached by Jason Myers.

LAST SEASON: Cambria Heights was 0-10 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Patton Stadium

COLORS: Columbia Blue and Red

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Cambria Heights plays in Section 1 with Bedford, Forest Hills, Bishop Guilfoyle, Central Cambria and Penn Cambria. Their non-section games this year other than Johnstown include Bishop McCort, Somerset, Bishop Carroll and Richland.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Johnstown lost to Bishop McCort 38-7 while Cambria Heights fell 26-6 to Bedford.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS has joined the LHAC in 2001, the Trojans have had their way with the Highlanders. They are 5-0 against Cambria Heights. They have outscored them 221-95 and the average score of each contest has been 44.2-19. The average margin of victory in these contests has been 25.2 points.

LAST MEETING: Last year, Johnstown beat Cambria Heights 49-23.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will be 54 degrees with a 20% chance of rain at kickoff. Winds will be from the northwest at 9 mph.

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week nine is against Bishop Guilfoyle.

SCHOOL: Cambria Heights is a Class A Catholic school located in Altoona. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 129. COACH: The Marauders are coached by Marty Georgiana.

LAST SEASON: Bishop Guilfoyle was 6-6 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Mansion Park

COLORS: Purple and Gold

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Bishop Guilfoyle plays in Section 1 with Bedford, Forest Hills, Cambria Heights, Central Cambria and Penn Cambria. Their non-section games this year other than Johnstown include Westmont, Bishop McCort and Somerset.

LAST WEEK’S RESULT: Johnstown beat Cambria Heights 49-14 while Bishop Guilfoyle beat Somerset 50-29.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN:  This is the first meeting between the two schools.

LAST MEETING:  See above

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will be 51 degrees with a 30% chance of rain at kickoff. Winds will be from the southeast at 9 mph.

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week ten’s opponent is the Penn Cambria Panthers.

SCHOOL: Penn Cambria is a Class AA school located in Cresson. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 246. The school district’s website can be viewed at www.pcam.org.

COACH: The Panthers are coached by Ernie Fetzer

LAST SEASON: Penn Cambria was 3-7 last year.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Penn Cambria High School Stadium

COLORS: Columbia Blue and Black

LHAC SECTION AND FUTURE OPPONENTS: Penn Cambria plays in Section I of the

LHAC along with Central Cambria, Bedford, Central, Cambria Heights and Forest Hills. Their non-section games this year are against Richland, Westmont, Bishop McCort, Somerset and Johnstown.

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: The Trojans beat Bishop Guilfoyle 36-19 while Penn Cambria defeated Somerset 40-26.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: Since JHS has joined the LHAC in 2001 the Trojans are 4-1 against the Panthers. Johnstown has outscored the Panthers 100-62. The average score of each of the five contests is 20-12.4. The average margin of victory in JHS’ four wins against PC is 13 points.

LAST MEETING: The Trojans beat the Panthers 36-34 a year ago.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will be 38 degrees and mostly clear at kickoff. There is no chance of rain in the forecast and winds should be from the WSW at 6 MPH.

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week eleven’s opponent is Indian Valley.

SCHOOL: Indian Valley is a Class AAA school located in Lewistown. Their male enrollment according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 421. COACH: The Warriors are coached by Tom Shearer

LAST SEASON: Indian Valley was 11-3 a year ago.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Red and Black

COLORS: Mitchell Memorial Field

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS: The Trojans beat Penn Cambria 32-26 while Indian Valley defeated Lewistown 40-14.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: These two teams have only met twice and the record is tied at one. Johnstown lost to the Warriors 42-14 in 2002 and won 17-6 in 2003.

LAST MEETING: The last time these two squads met was the 2003 playoffs when Johnstown defeat IV 17-6.

WEATHER FORECAST: According to Weather.com it will be 58 degrees with a 30% chance of rain at kickoff. Winds should be from the SSW at 5 MPH.

11/14/08

Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. Week twelve brings us to the District 6-AAA Championship Game. Johnstown takes on Hollidaysburg.

SCHOOL: Hollidaysburg is a Class AAA school with a male enrollment of according to the PIAA for the current classification period (2008-10) is 500. They are the largest AAA team in District 6.

COACH: John Barton coaches the Golden Tigers

LAST SEASON: Hollidaysburg was 9-3 a year ago. Currently, they are 9-1.

HOME FIELD/STADIUM: Tiger Stadium

COLORS: Navy Blue and White

LAST WEEK'S RESULT: Hollidaysburg had a first round bye while Johnstown defeated Indian Valley 35-7 in first round action.

HISTORY AGAINST JOHNSTOWN: The Trojans are 3-2 all time against Hollidaysburg. Their last meeting was in 2006 in the District 6-AAA first round. The Tigers beat the Trojans 13-12 that game. Prior to that, Hollidaysburg beat Johnstown 24-0 in the 1989 District 6-AAAA Championship Game. Johnstown won all three contests between the two teams in 1922-24. In 1922, Johnstown won 12-8, in 1923, Johnstown won 59-0 and in 1924 Johnstown won 52-0. For the series, Johnstown has outscored Hollidaysburg 135-45 winning by an average score of 27-9. The average margin of victory in Johnstown’s three wins is 38.33 while the average margin of defeat in the two losses is 12.5.

It’s quite amazing that these schools from neighboring counties haven’t played each other more. Especially in light of the great series Johnstown had with Altoona and Hollidaysburg is in close proximity to Altoona.
