Winter Roundup #1

Welcome to first installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: Dave Roman Jr. did not take long to get his maiden win as Head Coach of the Trojans as the varsity squad easily took care of the Forest Hills Rangers 56-29 on Wednesday night in the team's opener. Friday's contest against Richland was postponed due to weather.

The JV team started the season 1-0 after beating Forest Hills 33-26.

The varsity is busy this week as they host Altoona on Monday, Somerset on Wednesday and are on the road against Westmont Friday. The JV play Somerset on Wednesday and Westmont on Friday. The Altoona game is a Boys'/Girls' varsity doubleheader.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans are 0-2 on the young season. They lost to Forest Hills (22-53) and Punxsutawney (41-51). The contest with Richland was most postponed due to weather.

JV: The Lady Trojans' JV team is also 0-2. They lost to Forest Hills (16-29) and Punxsy (36-40).

This week the varsity host Altoona on Monday, are at Somerset on Wednesday and host Westmont on Friday. Like the boys' team, the JV will just be playing Wednesday and Friday due to the Monday varsity doubleheader with Altoona.

 

WRESTLING: The Trojan grapplers are 0-2 in dual meets so far this year, dropping decisions to Central Cambria (6-72) and Forest Hills (9-63). There was no information to report on individual performances in the Conemaugh Township Tourney.

The Junior High wrestlers are 0-2 after falling to Central Cambria (21-51) and Forest Hills (27-63).

This week: Both the varsity and the junior high teams are at Penn Cambria on Tuesday and at Northern Cambria on Friday.

 

HOCKEY: The JHS hockey program is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and the varsity squad is off to their best start in quite a few seasons. Participating in the Open Division, the Trojans are 6-3. They host Burrell on Friday.

Leading the varsity is Derek Grove (8 goals, 6 assists, 14 points) and Daniel Smith (9 goals, 3 assists, 12 points). David Dunkleberger has been in net for all but seven minutes. He's faced 238 shots and saved 222 of them, allowing 16 goals. His GAA is 1,809 and his save percentage is .933. He has posted four shutouts on the year.

JV: This squad is 1-7. They are at Kiski Area Friday.

Freshmen: They are 0-6 and are at Ferndale Friday.

Winter Roundup #2

Welcome to second installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The varsity boys' squad had a great, 3-0 week, staring things off with a home overtime win over archrival Altoona on Monday, followed by victories over Somerset and Westmont on Wednesday and Friday respectively. The team is now 4-0.

The JV team is 2-1 after beating Somerset but losing to Westmont.

The varsity and JV have just one contest this holiday week: they host Bedford on Monday.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans are 0-5 on the season after dropping all three of their contests last week. They fell to Altoona (33-61), Somerset (44-56) and Westmont (35-55).

JV: The Lady Trojans' JV team is 0-4. They lost to Somerset (25-42) and Westmont (27-36).

Like the boys' team, the Lady Trojans only play Bedford on Monday night in an away, non-section contest.

 

WRESTLING: The Trojan got their maiden victory on the season, a dual meet win over Northern Cambria (42-40) on Friday and are now 1-3. Earlier in the week, they suffered a 9-67 setback to Penn Cambria. The varsity squad is off until after the New Year. Below are the individual winners from the four dual meets:

The Junior High wrestlers are 0-3. They lost to Northern Cambria (21-39) but there was no result posted for the dual meet with Penn Cambria. The junior high squad is scheduled to wrestle at Conemaugh Township on Tuesday.

 

HOCKEY: Varsity hockey is now 7-3 after a 8-1 win over Burrell. They are at Hempfield Monday night.

We still have JV at 1-7 as there was no report from the game with Kiski. They are off until after the New Year.

The freshmen are now 0-7 after losing 5-4 to Ferndale. They too are off until after the New Year.

 

Winter Roundup #3

Welcome to third installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: Dave Roman Jr's team remains unbeaten at 5-0 after defeating Bedford (51-36) last Monday.

The JV improves to 3-1 after routing the Bisons 60-15.

Only the varsity is in action this week as they are playing in the Windber Rotary Tournament. Opening night is Monday against Westmont. The other game in the tourney is Windber against Our Lady of Sacred Heart, a WPIAL team.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Chuck DiFalco got his maiden victory as Head Coach of the Lady Trojans as they beat Bedford (58-44). They are now 1-5 on the year.

JV: The Lady Trojans' JV team is 1-4 as they too got their first victory of the season, a 39-24 win over Bedford.

Both the varsity and JV are off until after the New Year.

 

WRESTLING: There was no report on the junior high match against Conemaugh Township from a week ago.

Both the varsity and junior high grapplers are off until after the New Year.

 

HOCKEY: Varsity hockey is now 7-4 after a 7-4 loss at Hempfield.

The JV are (1-9) after suffering a 4-1 loss to Kiski Area.

The varsity, JV and freshmen teams are all off until after the New Year.

Winter Roundup #4

Welcome to fourth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The Trojans suffered their first loss of the season in the opening night at the Windber Rotary Tournament as they fell in overtime to Westmont 51-49. The squad rebounded the next night and blew out Windber 61-31 to take consolation honors. Paul Weatherly was named to the all-tournament team. The squad is now 6-1.

Both the varsity and JV squads are back in action next week. They host Bishop Carroll Wednesday and play at Bishop McCort Friday.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans' varsity are 1-5 and the JV are 1-4. They have a busy week after the holiday, playing at Forest Hills Monday, at Bishop Carroll on Wednesday and host Bishop McCort on Friday to close out the week.

 

WRESTLING: The varsity and junior high wrestlers get back in action with home dual meets against Somerset on Tuesday and Ligonier Valley on Thursday.

 

HOCKEY: All three hockey teams are back in action after the New Year.

The varsity played Connellsville on 1/2 and are hosting Greensburg-Salem on Thursday.

The JV were at Kiski Area on 1/2 and are hosting Latrobe on Thursday.

The freshmen team are at Hollidaysburg on Wednesday.

Winter Roundup #5

Welcome to fifth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The Trojans had a rough week as they lost both games, going 0-2. They lost 69-52 to Bishop McCort and 49-48 to Bishop Carroll. Their overall record drops to 6-3 on the season.

The JV was 2-0 on the week, beating McCort 54-31 and Carroll 52-20. They are now 5-1 on the season.

The varsity/JV are in action this week Monday at Richland, Wednesday at home against Bishop Guilfoyle and Friday at Penn Cambria.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans' fell to 1-8 on the season after going 0-3 on the week, dropping contests to Forest Hills (55-72), Bishop McCort (27-64) and Bishop Carroll (36-73).

The JV were 1-2 on the week, defeating Bishop McCort (41-38) but losing to Forest Hills (23-34) and Bishop Carroll (33-45). They are now 2-6 on the season.

Both squads are in action this week on Monday, at home against Richland, on Tuesday at Bishop Guiflyole and Friday they host Penn Cambria.

 

WRESTLING: The varsity and junior high dual meet with Somerset scheduled last Tuesday was cancelled due to weather and no rescheduled date has been named to date. The varisty lost to Ligonier Valley 54-24 while the junior high beat Ligonier Valley 42-15. In the varsity loss, JHS got wins from Malcolm Harris (103), Jim Cinco (135), Reggie Harris (140) and Chris Bilak (285). All the wins with the exception of Bilak were from forfeits.

The varsity are now 1-4 while we have the junior high at 1-3. The varsity is in action this week hosting Altoona on Monday, at Westmont on Tuesday and then at the Richland Duals on Friday and Saturday. The junior high is at Westmont Tuesday and then goes to the Meyersdale Tournament on Saturday.

 

HOCKEY: The Varsity team is now 8-4. The Connellsville game has been rescheduled for 2/16. The Trojans defeated Greensburg-Salem 4-1.  According to today's Post-Gazette, Trojan goalie David Dunkleberger is tops in the PIHL Open Division with 23 goals against, .929 save percentage and 1.94 GAA.

They play at Derry on Thursday.

JV: The JV are now 1-10-1 after tying Kiski Area 1-1 while they lost 5-0 to Latrobe. They host Westmont Tuesday.

Freshmen: The Freshman are now 0-9 after dropping a 9-2 decision to Hollidaysburg. They also host Westmont on Tuesday.

Winter Roundup #6

Welcome to sixth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The Trojans rebounded nicely, going 2-0 on the week scoring victories over Richland (73-62 ) and Bishop Guilfoyle (48-33). The contest with Penn Cambria scheduled for last Friday was postponed and no makeup date has been announced yet. The Trojans improve to 8-3 on the season.

The JV were 1-1 on the week, losing a one-point contest to Richland while defeating BG by 2. They are now 6-2 on the season.

Some stats for the season thus far: Paul Weatherly has 16.9 points per game, 10 rebounds per game, 2.5 steals per game, 2.4 assists per game and 1.8 blocks per game. Carlton Wyatt has 10.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.2 SPG and 1.3 APG. Richard Agurs has 9.5 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 3.2 SPG and 2.0 APG. Quadir Christian has 2.3 SPG and 3.3 APG. Weatherly has made 13 3-point baskets on the year while Josh Konor and Wyatt have dropped five treys. Christian has 4 triples and Cliff Eddins has 2.

The varsity/JV are in action this week with two home contests: Wednesday with Central Cambria and Friday with Richland.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: With the weather last week, the Lady Trojans only got one game in, a 50-29 loss to Bishop Guilfoyle. They are now 1-9 on the year.

The JV also lost to BG (30-32) last week. They are now 2-7 on the season.

Some stats for the season thus far: Tyneshia Smith has 13.2 PPG and 4.2 SPG. Lindsay Lovrich has 4.8 RPG. Chartice Wyatt has 4.5 RPG. Melissa Ravida has 1.5 APG. Ravida has 4 three-pointers, Lovrich 3 and Amber Mangus 2.

Both squads are in action three times this week: Monday at Conemaugh Township, Wednesday at Central Cambria and Friday at Richland.

 

WRESTLING: The varsity lost to Altoona 56-15 and Westmont 75-0. They were 3-5 at the Richland Duals, beating Conemaugh Township (48-30), Northern Cambria (42-24) and Berlin Brothersvalley (41-15) while losing to Huntingdon (3-68), Altoona (15-60), United (20-42), Shade (24-55) and Richland (18-65). They are now 4-11 on the season.

Junior High: lost 33-62 to Westmont. Nothing was reported on the Meyersdale Tournament. We have them at 1-4 on the season.

Prior to the Richland Duals, leaders on the squad were Malcolm Harris with 4 wins, Zayne Jenkinson with 3 and Gervon Simon, LaQuinn Stephens-Howling and Joe Bailey with 2 wins apiece.

The varsity and junior high are on the road this week for meets with Richland on Tuesday and Bedford on Thursday. The junior high are also at the Indiana Tournament on Saturday.

 

HOCKEY:

Varsity: The team is now 8-4-1 after tying Derry 4-4 last week. They only play once this upcoming week, a road contest with Kiski Area on Friday.

Some stats on our varsity guys: Derek Grove (14 goals-8 assists-22 points), Daniel Smith (12g-3a-15p) and Travis Weaver (5g-8a-13p) are the offensive leaders while David Dunkleberger continues to shine between the pipes with a 1.942 goals against and .929 save percentage.

JV: The team is now 1-10-2 after tying Westmont 1-1 a week ago. They are at Franklin Regional Tuesday.

Frosh: The team is now 0-10 following an 8-1 loss to Westmont. They host Richland Tuesday.

Winter Roundup #7

Welcome to seventh installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The Trojans had another 2-0 week and improve to 10-3 on the season. They defeated Central Cambria 79-44 Wednesday and Richland 58-49 on Friday.

The JV were also 2-0 on the week, defeating Central Cambria 53-27 and Richland 51-44. They improve to 8-2 on the season.

Both teams are at DuBois on Monday, at Somerset Wednesday and host Westmont Friday. The busy week also includes a makeup game with Penn Cambria on the road Thursday.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans went 0-3 on the week and have fallen to 1-12 on the season. They lost 61-34 to Central Cambria, 55-38 to Richland and 41-30 to Conemaugh Township.

The JV won two games last week and we have no report on the Conemaugh Township game (I have an email out to Coach DiFalco and will update this page if he gets back to me.) The JV Lady Trojans beat Central Cambria 37-32 and Richland 32-21. They are at least 4-7 on the season.

Just one game on the schedule for both squads this week, a home contest against Somerset.

 

WRESTLING: The varsity wrestlers have fallen to 4-13 on the season after dual meet losses to Richland (33-42) and Bedford (3-72) last week.

Junior High: nothing was reported on the Richland dual meet, the Bedford dual meet or the Indiana Tournament.

Both teams are at home Tuesday for dual meets against Cambria Heights.

 

HOCKEY:

Varsity: The team is now 8-4-2 after tying Kiski Area 3-3 last week. They only play once this upcoming week, a road contest with Burrell on Monday.

JV: We still have the JVs at 1-10-2 as nothing has been reported on their game with Franklin Regional a week ago. They ar scheduled to host Indiana on Monday.

Frosh: The team is now 0-11 following an 4-3 loss to Richland. They host Hollidaysburg Tuesday.

Winter Roundup #8

Welcome to eighth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The boys' basketball team is now 13-3 on the season after enjoying a 3-0 week. They defeated Quad-A DuBois 81-56, then Penn Cambria 78-66 and Westmont 49-41. Their contest with Somerset was postponed and will be made up Saturday.

The JV were 2-1 on the week, they lost 53-52 to DuBois they beat Penn Cambria 49-35 and Westmont 53-46. They are 10-3 on the season.

Aside from the above mentioned Saturday make-up with Somerset, both squads are at Bishop Carroll on Wednesday and hosting Bishop McCort on Friday.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans were idle last week as their only scheduled contest, a home game with Somerset, was postponed. A rescheduled date has not been announced as yet.

Both teams have three games this week: at Westmont on Monday, home against Bishop Carroll on Wednesday and at Bishop McCort on Friday.

 

WRESTLING: The varsity wrestlers have fallen to 4-15 on the season after dual meet losses to Cambria Heights (24-55) and Somerset (36-38).

The junior high was 1-1 on the week. They beat Cambria Heights 51-39 but lost to Somerset 18-77. Because of incomplete reporting to the media, we have them at 2-5 but several dual meets haven't been reported.

For this week, the varsity is at the Bucktail Tournament on Saturday while the Junior High team is at Roosevelt on Tuesday and at the Mountain Conference Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

 

HOCKEY:

Varsity: The team is now 9-4-2 after defeating Burrell 7-2 last week. They only play once this upcoming week, a road contest with Ford City on Thursday.

JV: We still have the JVs at 1-12-2. They lost 8-0 to Indiana last week. They are at Latrobe on Monday.

Frosh: The team is now 0-12 following an 12-1 loss to Hollidaysburg. They are at Somerset Thursday.

Winter Roundup #9

Welcome to ninth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

BOYS' BASKETBALL: After going 2-1 last week, the varsity is now 15-4. The Trojans defeated Bishop Carroll (58-38) and Bishop McCort (62-39) but lost to Somerset Saturday 63-62.

The JV beat Bishop Carroll (40-22) and Bishop McCort (60-29) and were 12-3 going into Saturday's contest with Somerset. I don't have the result of the Saturday game but I will post it as soon as I get it.

Three away games for both squads in Punxsutawney Monday, Cambria Heights Wednesday and State College Friday.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: After going 1-3 last week, the Lady Trojans are 2-15 on the year. They lost to Westmont (46-64), Bishop Carroll (46-47) and Bishop McCort (21-73) before defeating Somerset 51-47 to close out the week.

Of the four JV games last week, I only have two results at the present time. The squad lost 27-44 to Bishop Carroll and 41-55 to Bishop McCort. When the missing scores are received I will update this page.

Both teams are busy this week with four games: Monday they host Bedford, Wednesday they host Cambria Heights, Thursday they are at DuBois and Friday they host Richland.

WRESTLING: The varsity wrestlers are still 4-15 on the season as they only had the Bucktail Tournament last week.

I have no junior high results to report from the scheduled duel meet with Roosevelt or the Mountain Conference Tournament.

Both squads have their final dual meets Tuesday with Shade.

 

HOCKEY:

Varsity: The team is now 9-5-2 after losing 5-2 to Ford City last week. They host Hempfield on Monday and are at Hollidaysburg on Thursday.

JV: The JVs are now 1-13-2. They lost 10-0 to Latrobe last week. They host Norwin on Monday.

Frosh: We still have the freshmen at 0-12 as there was no report from their game with Somerset last week. They are not scheduled to play this week.

Winter Roundup #10

Welcome to tenth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The boys' varsity squad was 1-2 last week and finished the regular season with a 16-6 record. They beat Punxsy 50-33 but lost to Cambria Heights (57-61) and State College (45-56) later in the week.

JV: last week the team was 2-1, beating Punxsy (54-51) and Cambria Heights (70-23) but losing to State College (47-53). Their season is complete. I will have their final wins/losses next week, I am still looking for one last result.

The Trojans will play Tyrone in a first round 6-AAA playoff game at a date, site and time yet to be determined.

 

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: The Lady Trojans' season is over after going 2-2 on the week, beating Bedford (47-40) and Richland (61-40) but losing to Cambria Heights (35-69) and DuBois (42-47). They finish the season 4-17.

The JV was 3-1, beating Bedford (33-19), DuBois (43-32) and Richland (36-22), but losing to Cambria Heights (30-46). I will have their final win/loss record next week, I'm still looking for one missing result.

Both teams' seasons are complete.

WRESTLING: The varsity wrestlers finished the season with a 4-16 dual meet record after losing to Shade (21-60).

I have no junior high results to report from the scheduled duel meet with Shade. Their season is complete.

The following wrestlers will represent JHS in the 6-AAA individual tourney: Malcolm Harris (103), Zach Penrose (125), Jim Cinko (130), Vincent Beppler (145), LaQuinn Stephens-Howling (152), Gervon Simon (160), Montere Smith (171), and Zayne Jenkinson (215). Best of luck to all these Trojans!

 

HOCKEY:

Varsity: Last week's results: lost 9-2 to Hempfield but beat Hollidayburg 4-1. This week they host Connellsville on Monday and Ferndale on Thursday.

JV: Last week's results: lost 8-0 to Norwin. This week they host Penn Trafford on Tuesday.

Frosh: Last week: did not play. They are at Conemaugh Valley on Tuesday this week.

Winter Roundup #11

Welcome to eleventh installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The Trojans overcame some late game adversity and were able to prevail over Tyrone (57-54) in a first round playoff game. They advance to the 6-AAA title game against Somerset. That game will be Wednesday night at 8:30PM at St. Francis University.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Season complete

WRESTLING: Below are the results form the JHS wrestlers that competed in the 6-AAA individual tourney. (There were fewer than I originally posted last week):

125: Zach Penrose, 0-2

130: Jim Cinco 2-2

145: Vincent Beppler 2-2, lost 5th place match

152: LaQuinn Stephens-Howling 2-2, lost 5th place match

160: Gervon Simon 1-3, lost 5th place match

171: Montere Smith 1-2

HOCKEY:

Varsity: Last week's results: lost 7-6 to Connellsville but defeated Ferndale 10-2. They end the regular season 11-7-2.

JV: Last week's results: lost 5-0 to Penn Trafford. They finish the season at 1-15-2.

Frosh: Last week: beat Conemaugh Valley 4-3 to pick up their first win of the season. They host State College Tuesday.

 

Winter Roundup #12

Welcome to twelfth installment of Weekly Roundup for the winter sports season. Each week I'll review the previous week and preview the week to come in the Trojans' winter sports season.

 

BOYS' BASKETBALL: The Trojans defeated Somerset 70-54 to take the District 6-AAA championship. They will play Lancaster Catholic in the first round of the PIAA playoffs Friday night at Richland High School.

(I finally obtained the JV score I was missing and have their final record updated at 15-4).

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Season complete (I finally obtained the JV score I was missing and have their final record updated at 8-12).

WRESTLING: Season complete.

HOCKEY:

Varsity: Last week's results: lost to Connellsville 8-1 in the PIHL playoffs. They finish the season at 11-8-2.

JV: Last week's results: lost 5-0 to Penn Trafford. They finish the season at 1-15-2.

Frosh: Last week: lost 11-0 to State College. They host Altoona Tuesday.
