Each week on Friday Trojan Nation will give statistics and facts on the opponent the Trojans will face. The quarterfinal
round of the PIAA playoffs brings us to this week’s opponent: Bethlehem Catholic.
SCHOOL: Bethlehem Catholic is
a Class AAAA school located in the Lehigh Valley region as Bethlehem PA is actually part of both Lehigh and Northampton Counties.
The school is informally known as “Becahi” or “Beca”. They have a male enrollment of 286 according
to the PIAA for the current classification period (2016-18). For comparison purposes, Johnstown’s enrollment is
298. The school’s website is http://becahi.org/. The official athletics site has information on sports http://becahi.org/athletics/ while a football-only website can be accessed at http://www.becahifootball.org/. Finally the school’s twitter feed is https://twitter.com/becahi_hawks
COACH: The Bulldogs are coached by Kyle Haas. He is in his first season at the helm of the Hawks and according
to some April 2016 media reports he is an interim head coach as Joe Henrich was taking an indefinite leave of absence.
Haas served as offensive coordinator on Henrich’s previous staff. In the previous five seasons, the Hawks were
33-25 under Henrich’s tutelage and where back-to-back District 11-AAA champions in 2013 and 2014. LHAC member
Somerset knocked that 2014 team out of the PIAA playoffs in the quarterfinal round.
LAST SEASON: Last year BeCaHi was
9-2. Their season came to an end when they lost in the District 11-AAA semifinals to Saucon Valley.
FIELD/STADIUM: Bethlehem Area School District Stadium
COLORS: Gold and brown
Catholic is a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division. The other members of their conference/division
are Emmaus, Parkland, Freedom, Whitehall, Nazareth, Liberty, Easton and Northampton. Their out of division regular season
games were against Pocono Mountain West and Allentown Central Catholic. One of their losses was to ACC but they avenged
it the very next week against them in the opening round of the District 11 playoffs en route to the AAAA title. After that
they upended Saucon Valley and Pottsgrove.
An interesting note: Becahi’s schedule, including their scrimmage
is comprised of eight 6A teams, two 5A teams and only one 4A team. Juxtapose that with Johnstown, who only has one fellow
4A team on their regular season schedule and everything else below. (There are a lot of big schools out east!)
of note, two of the Hawks’ wins came over teams in Whitehall (5A) and Parkland (6A) that are still alive in the quarterfinal
round in their respective classifications. The District 11-AAAA champion has wins over the 11-AAAAA and 11-AAAAAA champions.
LAST WEEK’S RESULT: The Hawks defeated District 1-AAAA champ Pottsgrove 51-20 in first round PIAA action
in a game that took place at Northern Lehigh High School. JHS, of course won their first ever PIAA playoff game in a
42-32 win over Jersey Shore at STA Stadium in Williamsport.
LAST MEETING: These two programs have never played
each other before. The only Bethlehem area team JHS has history with is Liberty, who beat the Trojans 20-14 in 1949.
FORECAST: According to Weather.com, the high/low in Chambersburg will be 49/34. There is an overall 10% chance
of precipitation with winds from the WNW at 13 MPH
VENUE: Chambersburg High School Trojan Stadium
